Gamescom 2019 has included some great gaming news for fans, but no one was expecting to find out anything big about the PS5 during the expo.
Sony look set to announce the release date of their next PlayStation console at their own pace, and there is nothing to suggest a surprise reveal is coming this week.
However, that doesn’t mean the tech giant has been entirely silent when it comes to other big news connected to the PS4 and beyond.
This extends to announcements regarding software plans for the future and of the fate of a popular PlayStation franchise.
During Gamescom 2019, Sony announced that developers Insomniac Games would be joining their first-party studio list.
The acquisition was announced this week and came with some significant implications regarding PlayStation’s future output.
Insomniac Games will join the global development operation of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios and is the 14th studio to join the SIE WWS “family”.
“Joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people’s lives,” said Ted Price, Insomniac Games founder and CEO.
“We’ve enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel’s Spider-Man was a testament to this.
“We’re excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our longtime WWS partners. Most of all, we look forward to delivering fresh, new experiences for our fans.”
Notable games linked to Insomniac Games includes the Ratchet & Clank series, which looks set to make an appearance on the PS5.
Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Worldwide Studios boss Shawn Layden answered some big questions regarding the studio deal.
This touched on the future of the Sunset overdrive series, as well as how the deal will affect studio output in the future.
Referencing Sunset Overdrive, Layden revealed: “That was a great experience for Insomniac and they learned a lot through that, as well.
“As far as the IP itself, we really haven’t turned over the files on that one to see what that actually means, to be honest.
“We like what they’ve been doing in the Spider-Man franchise and things like Ratchet & Clank are certainly vital series in the present and future. That’s what we’re concentrating on.
Regarding what will be coming next from Insomniac, be it new or existing IP, Layden added: “All the studios at Worldwide Studios manage their franchise plans and manage their IP in a way they see best.
“Insomniac will be no different in that way. We’ll look at what they walk into the fold with. If they have ideas around new game concepts, which every team does, we will look forward with great anticipation to what the future brings.”
So while no new Ratchet & Clank game was revealed today by Sony, references to the future surely means an appearance on the PS5.
And there’s even the chance that Sony will feature the popular franchise as one of their upcoming cross-generational projects, meaning a PS4 launch could be on the cards too.
