Manchester United return to the Europa League for the first time since winning the competition in 2016-17, when they beat Ajax in Stockholm, tonight.

The Red Devils host Kazakhstani outfit Astana at Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to lead the club to European glory as a coach having already helped do so as a player in Barcelona in 1999.

Under the Norwegian, United reached the Champions League quarter-final stage last season only to be well beaten by Barcelona in the last eight.

With the competition less fierce in the Europa League, United will be regarded as one of the favourites, but Solskjaer is expected to name mix-and-match teams for at least the group stage.

“It’s a chance for some other players to get some minutes. We have a game every three or four days now so we’ll see the use of the squad tomorrow,” he said, speaking on Wednesday.

“It’s not just about enjoying yourself, it’s about getting results. But if you don’t throw them in, you don’t know what you’ve got.

“In the Europa League you meet different types of teams and cultures. It’s important we win our home games, especially with two of our away games on astroturf.

“I think all the boys watched the Premier League games, the top games, watch other teams win trophies. I think they will want to get there [Champions League], and we want to get there. The Europa League is a pathway to get there.”
