Sony may already have the leg up in the next-gen console war between the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett, it has been revealed.

New reports suggest that the PS5 might be packing a bit more power than the Xbox Scarlett.

While the full specs are yet to be revealed, one industry insider reveals why Sony may have the upper hand.

“Rumors before the show say the PS5 is more powerful than Project Scarlett, but we’ll see,” tweets Game Informer writer Andrew Reiner.

And with the E3 gaming expo all done and dusted, these rumours have seemingly been backed up by another source.

As Gamingbolt points out, former IGN Editor Colin Moriarty supports claims that the PS5 has more power under the hood.

Moriarty is said to have spoken to multiple developers abut the two consoles, and it’s the PS5 that’s said to have more raw power.

We won’t know for sure until closer to the Xbox Scarlett and PS5 release dates, but early reports give Sony the advantage.

The PS5 is certainly shaping up to be a beast, supporting 8K resolution, ray-tracing and much faster loading times.

The latter is possible thanks to the specialised solid-state drive, which will make a huge difference to processing speeds.

In Spider-Man on a PS4 Pro, for example, it can take upwards of 15 seconds to fast travel from one location to another. The PS5, on the other hand, will be able to handle the same task in less than a second.

Worlds can also be rendered at far greater speeds, which should inject more pace into games.

Of course, the Xbox Scarlett console (or consoles) have their own unique advantages.

Much like the PS5, the next-gen Scarlett will support backwards compatibility for every generation of the Xbox.

The extent of the support is yet to be revealed, but fans will be able to play at least some games from the original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

In a move that could save gamers some serious cash, Project Scarlett’s compatibility will also extend to Xbox One accessories.

This means that the expensive Elite Controller will work on Scarlett, not to mention any of your old headphones.

Microsoft explains more: “With Project Scarlett, we continue our commitment to compatibility by ensuring your gaming accessories and Xbox career will also move forward with you, along with thousands of games across four console generations which will look and play best on Project Scarlett.”

There’s a chance Sony could follow suit with the PS5, but we won’t know for sure until the next major PS5 reveal.
