Vanuatu will soon house the world’s first carbon neutral cruise destination, and the second instalment of Royal Caribbean’s ‘Perfect Day’ private island collection.

Set to open in 2022, the exciting new holiday destination will be the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere — an exclusive jaunt for Royal Caribbean guests where they can experience the island’s distinct culture and traditions, while immersing themselves in the region’s jaw-dropping natural beauty.

Perfect Day at Lelepa, Vanuatu, will be created in partnership with Royal Caribbean and the community of Vanuatu, and is set to provide employment and education opportunities for local residents.

“Vanuatu is a true paradise for both our people and the visitors we welcome to our shores each year,” says Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai.

“Today marks a major step forward in our island nation’s close relationship with Royal Caribbean and one that will support sustainable growth for future generations,” he adds.

Sustainability and protection of the island’s diverse ecosystem will play a major role in the design and construction of the island, with Cox Architecture, a design-focused Australian architectural firm serving as the lead architect on the project.

“We believe our destinations should be sustainably designed,” explains Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley. “That idea goes beyond simply protecting the ecological features of Lelepa and includes showing respect for the people and the traditions that make this a special place.”

THE CRUISE SHIPS WOWING THE WORLD

What the island will look like exactly — remains unknown. The cruise line’s first private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, focuses on things to thrill the kids thanks to its theme-park-like allure, but don’t expect too many water slides at Lelepa. Bayley has confirmed that southern counterpart will have an entirely different look and feel.

“Our guests around the world all have different definitions for their perfect day — and all of them are right. Our designers and nature have created the ideal South Pacific experience and we expect the results will be stunning.”

Royal Caribbean International is set to open five ‘Perfect Day’ private islands over the next five years.
